TOP TIPS FOR DRIVING IN HEAVY RAIN

March 14, 2024

Driving conditions can drastically change when weather strikes. Driving in rainy conditions is more challenging than driving in fine weather due to multiple factors. For instance, heavy rains make it challenging to see what is ahead and more difficult to stop the vehicle. Other risks are also involved such as aquaplaning.

New or well-maintained tires with optimal tread depth contributes to a safer rainy-day driving experience. Besides having good tires, you should be careful and conscientious when driving.

Below are some common-sense safety tips for rainy-day driving:

Switch on Lights, Not Brights

Although most modern cars have automatic running lights, you should turn on the headlights as you use windshield wipers as your tail lights are turned on too to identify all the four corners of your car. However, do not flip on the brights as they will reflect off wet surfaces, irritating you and other road users.

No Cruise Control

Do not activate your cruise control in the rain as you should be fully in control of your vehicle. If your car hydroplanes in cruise control, the automatic acceleration may make you lose control when your tires regain traction.

Slow Down

A good practice would be to leave at least five seconds of following distance between your car and the car in front. Besides, you should not feel the pressure of driving at the posted speed limit. Note that the speed [listed] on the highway is the maximum speed you are required to attain when the road is clear and the visibility is great; therefore, it is too fast on a wet road with reduced grip.

Do not Get in Too Deep

You should avoid driving on when the rain water covers the road markings. In fact, as little as three inches of water can make you lose control of your vehicle. Besides, a larger vehicle can push some of that water underneath your vehicle, resulting in engine stalling.

Do Not Turn Your Hazards On

When it starts raining, visibility is drastically reduced. As a result, many people turn on their hazard lights to make other drivers see them clearly. This practice is extremely dangerous as it creates a perception that your car has stalled.

Stop

If you feel unsafe at any point, pull over and stop. It is safer to get off the road and find a parking lot or a gas station to wait for the rain to stop. You can have something at a nearby restaurant as you wait. Use your hazard lights if you happen to stop on the side of the road.

The above safety tips can help you drive your vehicle safely on a rainy day. If you are experiencing any problem with your car, we invite you to bring your vehicle into International Sports Motors today for inspection, regular maintenance, and repairs.
